Case Study: Comprehensive Rebranding Initiative at Commercial International Bank (CIB) Kenya Limited
Context and Challenge:
In March 2023, a significant transition occurred when Commercial International Bank (CIB) Kenya Limited was acquired by its majority shareholder. The challenge was formidable overseeing an entire bank's rebranding in accordance with the directives from the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) within a tight six-month deadline. The stakes were high; failing to meet the deadline would result in substantial fines. Despite having been recently promoted and possessing minimal experience in such a large-scale endeavor, I was entrusted with leading the rebranding efforts.
Action Taken:
Upon assuming leadership, I first collaborated with the group brand and communications team to grasp the brand guidelines thoroughly. I received direct mentorship from the Head of Brand & Communications, gaining critical insights during a focused week-long workshop. To enhance interdepartmental cooperation, I formed a working group with representatives from key departments. I implemented a weekly-updated tracker to monitor progress and conducted regular accountability meetings. My dedication often extended to 17-hour workdays and weekend commitments to ensure we met our strategic objectives efficiently.
Results:
Our concerted efforts culminated in a successful rebranding of the bank well within the stipulated deadline. The external branding components, critical to our public perception, were particularly emphasized and completed timely. This initiative not only adhered to the CBK's regulations but also enhanced our market presence and brand visibility, preventing any potential financial penalties.

This experience was a profound professional growth opportunity, highlighting the critical importance of strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and resilience. Effective communication across various departments and the ability to drive a team towards a common goal were instrumental in the project's success. Case Study: Strategic Management of the Kenya Egypt Business Forum
Context and Challenge:
In March 2024, I was tasked with orchestrating the Kenya Egypt Business Forum, a significant bilateral event scheduled in a remarkably short timeframe. The forum was a critical initiative under the Joint Consultative Committee (JCC), featuring key dignitaries including Kenya's Prime Cabinet Secretary and Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. The urgency of the situation was compounded by the late notice from the Egyptian Ambassador to Kenya, presenting a substantial organizational challenge.
Action Taken:
To manage this high-stakes event effectively, I spearheaded coordination efforts by engaging directly with the Egyptian Embassy in Kenya and the Ministry of Trade. My approach involved systematic weekly meetings to ensure all parties were aligned and fully prepared. I delegated key responsibilities: the Embassy managed invitations for Egyptian enterprises, while the Ministry of Trade handled Kenyan company and government agency invitations. My role focused on overseeing logistics and vendor management, ensuring every aspect of the event was meticulously planned and executed.
Results:
The forum was executed seamlessly within the constrained timeline, culminating in a successful one-day event that garnered positive feedback from all stakeholders. This achievement was not just a testament to effective project management but also showcased my ability to navigate complex international protocols and deliver results under pressure.
Key Learnings:
This experience underscored the importance of strategic delegation and the power of collaboration across different governmental bodies and international entities. Effective communication and precise coordination were instrumental in overcoming the challenges posed by the tight schedule.

Case Study: Cultivating Strategic Media Partnerships at CIB Kenya
Context and Challenge:
Upon joining Commercial International Bank (CIB) Kenya as Assistant Manager of Marketing, Brand and Communication, I faced the immediate challenge of creating a substantial media presence from scratch. With no prior media relations or a designated marketing department and operating under a tight budget, the task was to build effective media engagement to support the bank’s brand visibility and market penetration in a competitive environment.
Action Taken:
To address this challenge, I led the development of a strategic media relations initiative aimed at building enduring relationships with key media personalities. This initiative involved organizing a targeted visit to Egypt for select Kenyan journalists, designed to immerse them in CIB’s corporate and cultural environment. The meticulously planned trip included business-class travel, luxury accommodations, and detailed itineraries featuring interactions with CIB’s top executives and tours of our significant operational sites. I also facilitated exclusive meetings with key stakeholders such as government ministers and top management to provide journalists with unique insights and content. My effective project management and strategic planning skills ensured the seamless execution of this event, managing logistics and budgets under tight deadlines.
Results:
The campaign resulted in extensive positive media coverage, significantly boosting CIB's brand recognition in the Kenyan market. The initiative established a network of strategic media contacts who continue to provide favorable coverage and support for the bank’s ongoing initiatives, enhancing our strategic media relations capabilities and solidifying our market presence.
Key Learnings:
This experience highlighted the value of strategic media engagement over traditional advertising and emphasized the importance of personal relationships in media relations. It also demonstrated the effectiveness of providing immersive experiences to media representatives as a way of fostering genuine and lasting partnerships.
